For nearly eight years now, we’ve noticed something interesting:

A lot of people see rum drinks, tropical flavors, floral accents, and island-inspired cocktails and immediately think, “Oh, it’s a tiki bar.”

And honestly, we get it. Most people never really stop to ask the difference between “tiki” and “tropical.” They overlap quite a bit. But they’re not exactly the same thing.

Rum Sugar Lime has never really been a traditional tiki bar.

Tiki culture has roots in mid-century escapism — elaborate décor, Polynesian-inspired fantasy, carved idols, dramatic presentation, and the idea of being transported somewhere far away for a couple of hours. Some of the greatest rum cocktails ever created came from that movement, and we absolutely respect the history and creativity behind it.

But RSL has always leaned a little broader. A little more modern. And honestly, a little more grounded.

We think of ourselves as a tropical cocktail bar inspired by rum, hospitality, music, conversation, and vibrant flavors from all over the world.

The Caribbean. Cuba. Jamaica. Martinique. Polynesia. Central and South America. Classic rum cocktails. Modern tropical drinks. Bright citrus. Spice. Sugar. Bitter. Funk. Smoke.

That world of flavor is what inspires us.

And freshness has always been at the center of everything we do.

Every citrus juice at Rum Sugar Lime is squeezed fresh. Our syrups, infusions, and seasonal ingredients are made with intention. Some cocktails take an almost unreasonable amount of time to prepare, but that care is part of the experience.

We’ve never wanted RSL to feel like a gimmick.

We wanted it to feel warm. Welcoming. Human.

A place with great music, thoughtful cocktails, real conversation, strong non-alcoholic options, and hospitality that feels personal instead of performative.

And somehow, through pandemics, construction projects, changing trends, economic challenges, and everything else Reno has thrown at independent businesses over the years… we’re still here.

Eight years later, Rum Sugar Lime remains the longest-running tropical cocktail bar Reno has ever had.

That means something to us.

Not because we think we have everything figured out, but because it means people continue to walk through our doors, pull up a seat, and spend part of their evening with us.

For that, we’re incredibly grateful.

So whether you call us tiki, tropical, rum-forward, cocktail-focused, or simply “that little place in MidTown with the good drinks,” thank you for supporting Rum Sugar Lime over the past eight years.

We’ll keep squeezing the limes.
